Match report from tonight's home draw in the encounter versus Southport

It was billed as a big relegation six-pointer but Tamworth and Southport had to settle for a point each after a drab draw at The Lamb.

Certainly the Merseysiders will be happier with a point as it keeps Tamworth rooted to the foot of the table, but this was a game neither side could afford to lose.

As a result, both sides showed nerves and were overly cautious, which did no favours for the game as a spectacle.

The visitors had the better of the first half and just before half-time, Lambs centre-back Matt Redmile mis-judged a Dominic Morley cross and the ball fell invitingly for Steve Daly but Sean Bowles did superbly to save at Daly's feet.

But in terms of clear cut chances, that was about it for the first 45 minutes.

While Southport may have been pleased with the lack of goalscoring chances, Lambs manager Mark Cooper certainly wasn't and he changed his two strikers at half-time, introducing Danny Davidson and veteran Bob Taylor.

Tamworth posed more of a threat in the second period but wasted the best chance of the game in the 62nd minute when Carl Heggs picked out Dominic Roma at the far post but the on-loan wing-back headed over from three yards out.

Bowles denied Daly again with another brave save and then Davidson went close with a header from an Alan Neilson cross.

In the end, a draw was a fair result but it was the visitors who will be more satisfied with the outcome, while Tamworth still have a lot of work to do to avoid the dreaded drop.
